The first step in creating a tie-dye with vibrant colors is known as “the scour.” This step will remove all dirt, optic whiteners and other impurities from your fabric, leaving it clean and ready to take the dye. First wash your 100% cotton garment in warm water, soda ash and synthrapol. These chemicals are essential in removing the impurities that will interfere with the dye binding correctly to the fabric. We purchase our chemicals from Dharma Trading Company.
How to choose a fabric - It seems like any cotton fabric would work great for tie-dyeing, but you will find that different fabric weight gives different results. If you are making a tie-dye t-shirt, Hanes Beefy-Ts are the ultimate heavyweight shirt. They are durable in the wash, and they take the dye incredibly well. You may want to start with some simple folding patterns at first as the heavier the fabric is, the more practice it takes to make intricate folds.
When practicing more detailed folds, like mandalas, it is helpful to buy lightweight cotton to begin with. This way you can make more folds while retaining some control over them.
